Meet the Maker: Micki Klawes of The Petite Cakery

Meet Micki + The Petite Cakery

My interest in baking was sparked as a child when my mom would let me and my sister each pick out our dream birthday cake from that year's Wilton cake catalog. She would then re-create each of our dream cakes, a tradition I took on when my own children were born. I would spend as much time as it took to design the PERFECT birthday cake for each of them. A ladybug cake to match my daughter's bug themed bedroom decorations, a cake that matched my son's favorite blue doggie stuffed animal, a 3-D cake that looked like Nemo from Finding Nemo; you name it, I tried it. And I LOVED it!

Fast forward several years of their birthdays to 2016, and my sister asked me if I could make a Rose Cake for her first daughter's blessing;a Rose Cake is one covered (and I mean covered!) in buttercream roses. I had never made a Rose Cake before, but after one look at an image of what she wanted, I thought "sure, I can give that a go". I made that Rose Cake (along with my first from-scratch-cake), and it not only turned out beautifully, but it tasted delicious. Someone at that blessing party was soon getting married and asked if I could make their wedding cake, and the spark that started as a child was ignited! The Petite Cakery was born.

The intent of The Petite Cakery is to create lasting memories through delicious cakes & cupcakes. My baked goods are each made to order and are perfect in every way - phenomenal flavor combinations, beautiful and moist. And most importantly - every item made at The Petite Cakery tells a story, because everything is designed with each individual customer's needs in mind. When customers have something particular in mind, I can create custom flavors or custom designs to specifically meet their requests. One special custom flavor order was designed to match a customer's sister-in-law's favorite cake - Cassata cake, which is an Italian traditional sponge cake. And one of my favorite custom designs was a first birthday smash cake in the shape of a baby owl, with a matching owl-themed tiered cake for the guests. It's important to me to be attuned to the needs of the community, so in addition to baked items made with Classic Flour, I also have Dairy Free, Gluten Free, Keto and Refined Sugar free offerings.

I'm also energized by partnering with local businesses for fun events such as Cupcake & Beer Pairings, which have offered a great opportunity to see how others do things, to learn from them and to, most importantly, connect. The Petite Cakery is a small woman-owned bakery in Lakewood CO, specializing in delicious cakes & cupcakes which are designed to create lasting memories for any gathering. Keep an eye out for The Petite Cakery at some upcoming Colorado events, including a booth at this summer's Downtown Lakewood Street Food Social, a June feature on "Local Biz Buzz" and some pop-ups that are in the works.

Learn more about Micki below!

What are you known for?

I am known for being personable & relatable, for providing excellent customer service and for meeting each customer’s individual needs, with baked goods that tell a story and look as beautiful as they taste.

What do you like to do outside of work?

Outside of work, I enjoy taking our dog for walks around nearby reservoirs with my husband, spending time with family & friends, watching my daughter ride horses, watching my son play baseball and hanging outdoors with a cocktail (spicy Paloma is my fave). Oh, and dreaming about traveling!

What was the best day at work you've had in the past three months?

The best day I’ve had at work in the past three months was when I reopened in February after the throws of the pandemic. My customers told me how excited they were and many shared they had been frequently checking & watching my website during the pandemic to see if I was reopened yet and that they had surrendered to trying other bakeries during that time and they were just not satisfied. It was so fulfilling to see how excited they were to know I was baking again!

What is your biggest challenge?

My biggest challenge is harnessing my perfectionism and anxious tendencies into strengths that benefit me rather than qualities that paralyze me.

If you had a choice between two superpowers, being invisible or flying, which would you choose?

I would definitely choose flying!
