Sugar Shocked Cakehouse is my business and I specialize in customer cakes & cupcakes, as well as gourmet cupcakes with one-of-a-kind flavors and monthly sweets boxes. For example, February will have Valentine’s Day cakesicle boxes!

What is your favorite part of your job?

I particularly love the look on customer’s faces once they see the cake they described to or sent inspiration pictures of. This is my creative outlet, so it’s really fulfilling in many ways because I get to challenge myself with designs and new techniques. It’s one of the best feelings when a customer is excited about the end result. One thing that I hear the most is “Wow, this smells good. How do you not eat cake all day?”

How did your business come to exist?

My story of how Sugar Shocked Cakehouse got started is pretty unique. I think it was definitely meant to be. I had always loved baking in the kitchen growing up with my mom and grandma’s. One of my grandma’s used to be a cake decorated as well. When I was in high school, for a short time, I would make all of the family birthday cakes and decided to try out fondant after watching Cake Boss on repeat. Ironically, my story stops here and I chose a different path for college.

During the pandemic shutdowns, I was recovering from an intense surgery on my leg that had me on crutches for 3 months. Being an extravert, this was definitely a big challenge. I was extremely bored and randomly decided to start baking again. It started as a way to keep me preoccupied and satisfy my need for a creative outlet. I played around with flavors and decorated cakes for friend’s birthdays (yes, I was so bored I did all of this while on crutches!) I really owe a lot to my friends and family who encouraged me to start my own business after being shocked by my “hidden talent”. I was hesitant at first, but then decided maybe I could get a few orders a month. I was very wrong and so glad that I was! There were many people in my community reaching out that were willing to give me a chance.

I am 100% self-taught and always had a love for decorating. I never seriously considered this because I hadn’t gone to school for it, but when you have a strong passion for anything I think it tends to come naturally. If I hadn’t had surgery or something else to fulfill my time, I’m not sure if I would have started baking again because I never had the spare time to fully commit. I’m incredibly thankful that something that seemed like a negative in my life gave me something so positive.

Where do you find inspiration?

I would say that I truly live and breathe Instagram, so I’m always finding inspiration from others on there. It’s such a challenge to figure out how they designed a cake just by looking at a photo. I’m usually on TikTok as well because there is so much good food/baking content. I would say I take inspiration from here, but I equally use this as a platform for me to learn being that I am self-taught.

What are you working on right now?

Currently, I am working on Valentine’s and Galentine’s Day gift boxes. I wanted to challenge myself to try something new. I am trying my hand at customizable cakesicles for the holiday, which are finally ready for pre-order!

What are you known for?

According to customers, I would say I’m known for the unique flavors I try to create. I’m really inspired by trendy flavors like S’mores cake, cannoli cupcakes, and cereal & milk cupcakes. I think this is what has helped me capture people’s attention. That, and the drool worthy gourmet cupcake photography I post on my Instagram.
