Artist Statement

For almost 40 years Cheryl Browder has lived in Gunnison, Colorado.  In this amazing setting she has found inspiration for her plein air and studio landscape paintings.  Cheryl has been drawing and painting for most of her life.  Encouraged by her family, she took art lessons when she was quite young, then continued her studies at Massachusetts College of Art, graduating with a BFA in Graphic Design in 1980.  Later, nurturing her lifelong interest in art, she studied painting with artists she admired and respected through workshops.

An avid hiker, Cheryl has developed a love of the outdoors that influences her artwork today.  She draws upon her time outside to provide inspiration for her pastel paintings.  As a representational artist, she is constantly striving to capture the values, colors and atmosphere of the landscape, which she finds is best done through direct observation.  The pastel medium allows for spontaneity and brilliant color as the pure pigment is applied and mixed directly to the paper’s surface.

Cheryl is a current member of the Pastel Society of Colorado.
