Layers Through Time

2590 W Main St

Meet Michael

Michael Morris has always created. As a child growing up in Michigan, he built things from Lego blocks, Lincoln Logs, and Tinker Toys. In school band, he played trumpet, then took up guitar and accordion, writing songs along the way. He enjoyed drawing houses at an early age and eventually went on to earn Bachelor’s degrees in both Architecture and Architectural Illustration at Lawrence Technological University in Southfield, Michigan. He landed professionally as an architectural illustrator for over 15 years.

Michael earned his AAS in Fine Woodworking from Red Rocks Community College in Lakewood, CO in 2016. As a woodworker, he began with designing furniture but was drawn to the more abstract world of art. While always creative and a creator, his “Layers” series is his first step into the world of Fine Art. He creates because it is in his nature to create; “art” is simply the latest manifestation of this.

Artist Statement

”I always enjoy studying the geological formations found in the Rocky Mountains. Each layer of stacked rock varies in color, thickness, density, and material. The combination of these layers make a unique story of the history of that location. What caused this particular layer? What creatures roamed the earth? These formations led me to develop my “Layers” series.”

”In my art, I am drawn to the elegance of a perfectly executed curve, the seamless flow between varying radii. Combined with areas of ruggedness, a story is told of competing temperaments that still somehow work together in harmony. Finding balance is deeply satisfying.”

”When I work with wood, I am reminded that we are all intimately connected with nature. Wood provides that natural warmth and peace that one experiences while deep in the forests of the Rocky Mountains or while relaxing under a shade tree in a city park. It is this sense of joy and wonder that I strive to bring to my art.” ~ Michael Morris

A Cross Country Mile

Learn more about Michael Morris in our Q+A!

What are you working on right now?

I’m currently working on a series of abstract sculptures inspired by the form of feathers.

How did your business come to exist?

I began woodworking with the idea of making furniture. After receiving an associates degree in fine woodworking, I discovered that I usually didn’t want to make what clients asked of me and my shop was much too small for making furniture anyway. So I turned to art which allowed me to be as creative as I liked and scale the art to what I was physically able to make in my space.

Push the Sky

What is the best piece of advice that you ever received?

Sketch….a lot! Sketching led me to my sculptural style in general and to nearly every piece I’ve created.

Who or what are your biggest influences?

In the most literal sense, nature is my most direct influence as my sculptures were inspired by geology. But as an artist, any other artist of any form can inspire me. Seeing the way others present, collaborate, endure, change, stand out, etc. are all constant inspiration.

The Lone Crane

What is your dream project?

My dream is to be able to expand my shop space and create larger, free-standing sculptures and perhaps create sculptures intended for outdoor spaces.

What is your favorite part of your job?

My favorite part of my job is being able to express myself through creativity.
